DRINKING GREEN
The Facts About Resveratrol - Miracle panacea or sugar pill?
According to Mayo Clinic staff, red wine and something in red wine, called Resveratrol, may be good for your heart. Although more testing is needed in humans, tests with mice have shown a marked effect in preventing damage to blood vessels, reducing "bad" cholesterol and preventing. Animal tests also suggest that resveratrol helps protect against obesity and diabetes.
Resveratrol comes from the skin of grapes. Red wine tends to be fermented with the grape skins than white wine, leading to higher concentrations in red wine then white. However, based on the mice tests, humans would have to drink up to a thousand bottles of wine a day to acquire the equivalent doses of resveratrol. (There's a party waiting to happen!) However, drinking alcohol in moderation can still be beneficial as those who do so seem to have a lower occurrence of heart disease. Moderation is defined as two drinks a day for men and one for women. (Men generally weigh more and have more of an enzyme that metabolizes alcohol)
A drink is defined as 12 ounces (355 milliliters, or mL) of beer, 5 ounces (148 mL) of wine or 1.5 ounces (44 mL) of 80-proof distilled spirits.
The benefits of resveratrol recently caught the attention of CBS's "60 Minutes"
CONCLUSION: There needs to be more research done to confirm the benefits to humans, but maybe, just maybe....
